BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana head coach Mike Freitag continued to bring in the top players nationally with the addition of the NSCAA/adidas Boys High School National Player of the Year Eric Alexander. He joins a duo of United States Under-17 National Players already on campus in Ofori Sarkodie and Kevin Alston, who enrolled in classes in January following the FIFA Under-17 World Championship.
"We are excited to have Eric join the IU soccer program," Freitag said of the Hoosier signee. "He is a very talented player, who played for former Hoosier B.J. Snow. His ability and talent is demonstrated in the fact that he was recognized as the national high school player of the year by the NSCAA. I believe Eric's best soccer is still ahead of him, and he will be an asset for our program."
Alexander heads to Indiana after spending his high school career playing for former Hoosier B.J. Snow at Portage Central High School. Snow played at Indiana from 1996-99 and helped the Hoosiers to back-to-back national championships in 1998 and 1999. Alexander was a four-time all-conference selection and finished his senior season with 28 goals and 12 assists at Portage Central.
Along with being named the national player of the year, Alexander was Mr. Soccer in the state of Michigan. He was a two-time first team Division I All-State selection. Alexander helped Portage Central to regional finals each of his final two seasons and was named to the Michigan High School Soccer Coaches Association (MHSSCA) Boys' Soccer Dream Team in 2004 and 2005. The Dream Team recognizes the top 11 players in Michigan.
Alexander was one of 76 players nationally to be named an NSCAA/adidas High School All-American as a senior. He was an NSCAA/adidas Youth All-American in 2004 as well as 2005. During both those years, Alexander was invited to the prestigious adidas Elite Soccer Program (ESP) Camp and was named to the all-star team both years.
He played club soccer for Vardar 88. Alexander helped his team claim a pair of State Cup titles and advance to the USYS National Championship last summer.
The soccer program anticipates announcing more signees in the weeks to come. Keep an eye on IUHOOSIERS.com for any developments.
