IU Sails Past Youngstown State, Advances to Hampton Inn Classic Championship Game

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.-- - Seniors Jenny DeMuth and Cyndi Valentin netted 12 and 10 points, respectively, to lead the IU women's basketball team to its first win of the season. The 74-38 win over the Youngstown State Penguins tonight marked Indiana's first under head coach Sharon Versyp. The victory moved Indiana (1-2) into the championship game, where they will take on Bowling Green (3-0) tomorrow at 7 p.m.

IU opened up with an early 14-0 lead with DeMuth and Valentin leading the charge and the Hoosiers never looked back. Youngstown State missed its first six shots and did not score until the 15:12 mark. The Penguins began to show signs of life when they went on a 10-0 run to bring the score to 26-16 with 2:17 left in the first stanza, but it was as close as they would get the rest of the way. Indiana entered the locker room with the 30-17 advantage.

Indiana gained its largest lead of the night when it went up 70-30 at the 3:37 mark after a lay-up by Sarah McKay. The Hoosiers dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Penguins, 51-33.

My'Kea Cohill led Youngstown State with seven points on the night.

IUPUI and Youngstown State will face each other in the consolation game tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. Indiana will look for its sixth-straight home tournament title when they face Bowling Green tomorrow at 7 p.m. IU's game can be heard live on WHCC 105.1 with Jeremy Gray calling all the action.
