BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's basketball team could not overcome a tough Bowling Green team as it fell, 68-50, in the championship game of the Hampton Inn Classic Saturday night. The loss moves the Hoosiers to 1-3 on the season, while the Falcons improve to 4-0.
For the second-straight game, seniors Jenny DeMuth and Cyndi Valentin netted double-figures, as DeMuth had 18 and Valentin finished with 21.
Bowling Green controlled the majority of the first half, trailing only once and leading by as many as seven. Meanwhile, Indiana committed costly turnovers down the stretch and struggled to find its offensive rhythm. Sophomore Carrie Smith's hook-shot in the paint tied the score at 26-26 with 2:11 left in the opening stanza, but Carin Horne connected on a baseline jumper to give the Falcons a 28-26 advantage heading into the break.
The Falcons continued to rattle the Hoosiers and got the second half started with a 12-3 run to go ahead by 11, 40-29, with 14:12 remaining in the game after Liz Honegger nailed a three-pointer. Honegger, who went scoreless in the first half, became hot from three-point range, hitting three straight treys to keep the game in Bowling Green's favor. . IU soon found itself down 50-35 with 7:23 left in the second. Indiana struggled from the field and did not have enough in them to make a comeback. The Hoosiers made a valiant effort and managed to cut the lead to nine, but it was the Falcons the rest of the way as they went on to claim the victory.
Honegger and Horne finished with 12 and 15 points, respectively, for Bowling Green, with two other Falcons notching double digits.
After four-straight home games, the Hoosiers hit the road for their first away game when they travel to Nashville, Tenn., to take on the Belmont Bruins on Tuesday, Nov. 29, at 7 p.m. Fans can listen to the game on WHCC 105.1 with Jeremy Gray calling all of the action.
